January through June 1999 - foster animals

Count June 17th: 72 foster cats/kittens fostered so far. (16 on this page of 1999)

June 7, 1999 - June 17, 1999

#? Cuddles - Torioseshell, adult (mom), F, stray, shorthair.
#? unnamed - orange tabby, born May 4th, M, stray, medium hair.
#? unnamed - brown tabby, born May 4th, M, stray, medium hair.
#? unnamed - orange tabby, born May 4th, M, stray, medium/long hair.
#? Timothy Thomas - orange tabby, born approx. May 17th, M, stray, medium/short hair.
#? Gray-gray - gray tabby, born approx. May 21st, F, stray, short hair.

This litter is one that another family was fostering. They were having visitors/vacation and we offered to take care of these guys for a week.
The older three boys are Cuddles own litter. They are very playful and busy. Little Timmy the younger add-in kitten likes to try to keep up with them when he's not busy nursing.
Gray-gray is an adorable kitten. She's almost a solid gray with tabby mostly on her legs. She has a little cream color highlighting her face and her body looks like a little mini-cat, not the usual awkward kitten proportions. Gray-gray was just starting a URI when they dropped her off and in a few days stopped nursing so we tube fed her. She has the loudest squeal I've ever heard a kitten make when she is unhappy. I love Gray-gray though. I have a soft spot for the gray ones. She has a home already with the person who found her (I guess that loud voice helped a lot with that).
Cuddles takes good care of all the kittens and spends a lot of time nursing the younger two especially. She is very friendly. She has some mystery bald patches on her neck.

June 5, 1999

Today we finally made it official and adopted Jadzia (whom we've been fostering since 9/98). It was anticlimactic, after my tough decision to keep her. She is a great little cat. It is really hard to believe our little 'kitten' had a litter of seven when we first got her.

May 27, 1999 - June 5, 1999

#17987 Melody - mostly white w/grey tail + spots, ~ 8 wks, F, stray, shorthair.
#? Maestro - brown tabby w/ white, ~ 6 wks old, M, stray, medium hair.

Melody is getting over a URI and keeping company with little fluffy Maestro. Maestro is a little shy around people so we tried to socialize him a little and boy were we successful! He ended up being more friendly than Melody. But she is more relaxed and adaptable. They had fun together and we enjoyed meeting these two little ones.

April 2, 1999 - May 27, 1999
#17987 Nanette aka Nanna - tortie/tabby, adult (mama), F, stray, shorthair.
#18248 Sam-I-Am - orange tabby, born 4-1-99, M, stray, medium hair.
#18246 Pink - tortie, born 4-1-99, F, stray, shorthair.
#18247 Aurora - tortie, born 4-1-99, F, stray, shorthair.
#18249 Rumbelow - brown tabby w/white, born 4-1-99, M, stray, shorthair.

The shelter decided to let us foster young kittens again (with a catch). These kittens were born April Fools day and luckily have only gotten mild versions of their mama's mild cold. Mama is a lover, but not quite sure about people yet. She has begun to be a talker now that she has gotten used to us. Sam had a rough day or two initially and has needed some supplimenting being the runt. He has the cutest dark eyes and yoda ears. He gives me little kitten kisses after we feed him and he purrs. What a little darling. Aurora started out small, but is really bulking up. She looks like a little dark bear. She is fluffy for a short hair kitten. Rumbelow has adorable white paws. He loves to wrestle. Pink has a pink nose and on one paw a real pink 'pinky' finger. She is a little snuggler.
We went on a 10 day vacation (with a petsitter to watch our own and these fosters) and came back to find they'd grown 50% bigger and that Sammy is really a medium hair. What a little fluff ball!
Updates: We stopped by the shelter and visited on May 29th and already everyone but Nanna and Pink had holds. Aurora was really friendly there which was a surprise, but Pink was acting shy. Sammy was holding court with all his admirers, lounging at the front of the cage. On a later visit, June 5th, Sammy and Nanna were still there. I don't know what happened to Sammy's hold, but I was glad to see that Pink found a home. Unfortunately mama and Sam were a little sick. We were hoping it was just a reaction to the distemper combo vaccine but I heard later that week they had to be moved to the sick area for a while. When Mark stopped by on 6-16 Sammy appeared to be already back out and adopted, but Nanna was struggling with an upset eye.
Further updates: My petsitter Amy, who is a vet tech and volunteers once a month to spay/neuter at the shelter, said they spayed Nanna in July. In September she told me that the person who adopted Nannette brought her into Amy's clinic for a checkup and they haven't changed Nanna's name!

March 25, 1999 - April 2, 1999
#17868 Emily Rose - dilute/muted tortie w/white, adult, F, stray, shorthair.

Emily Rose was named at the shelter and the name suits her (though she won't answer to it!). She is a real purr angel that loves attention. She was already doing well when we got her, so she was an easy foster with no meds or worries, just love her up. She looks a LOT like a tortie version of our Megan. She has the same build and head shape and mannerisms and poses. It is strange but wonderful to meet this friendly version of Megan. (We almost named our Megan Emily as well!) The pictures here are of Emily meeting our new pet Sesame.
Update 5/27/99: I stopped in at Mounds in Middleton and was surprised to see Emily there! I had a quick visit with her. They said she likes to keep to herself and isn't thrilled about the other cats. But I'm glad she is at a Mounds center since they don't euthanize those animals. 6/11/99 Emily Rose was adopted! I know because I started volunteering at Middleton on Tuesday evenings and on my first night a very nice woman stopped by and put a hold on Emily Rose. She set up the adoption for Friday and the next Tuesday she came back and said Emily is doing even better than she hoped. She has made herself right at home and it is working out wonderfully. She is an only cat and in a great home.

March 9, 1999 - March 25, 1999
#1774 'Peanut' Buttercup - brown tabby w/white, 6 months old, F, stray, shorthair.

Peanut was named at the shelter since she was there 2 weeks before we got her. I added buttercup onto her name because we had already had a peanut as a foster cat. She is a very friendly playful little ball of love. She loves attention and loves to play. She got into everything! (Nicknamed the 'Civet')

January 29, 1999 - March 7, 1999
#17175 Baby - black, 5 years old, F, spayed, shorthair.

Baby was fostered by someone else before us but they were going on vacation and Baby was still not eating on her own. She'd been hand fed for 12 days already and she still can't smell enough to eat on her own. She was already named Baby and it really suits her well! She is a little tubby, like a big black teddy bear. She is very sweet but tries to intimidate us by howling/growling, but it is hard to take her seriously when she snuggles in purring only seconds later. She likes to be fed while being held cradled on her back like a real baby. She also is very happy to sit and get an IV inserted for fluids under the skin, so long as she gets attention. She is lonely at night though since she had been in the last foster home's bedroom with them at night and she is now alone.
Baby was a surrender, her only owner gave moving as the reason for surrender.
Baby went down to Mounds Fitchburg for adoption. She spent a few weeks out with our cats and the mutual dislike was pretty strong, but everyone settled down. She seems to be really doing well at Mounds. She's already getting along better with the other cats there. She has some possible liver damage from not eating sooner but hopefully it will not be severe now that she's eating well again.
(BTW We finally found out why she wasn't eating...she only likes Science Diet Dry! Who would have believed that she'd turn down cat treats, various other dry foods, canned selections, people tuna, shrimp, cold cuts, and more because she only recognizes Science Diet as food?!)
Update 5/28/99 Baby is still at Mounds but the vet rechecked her blood counts and said she is back to healthy, no permanent liver damage! 5/31/99 Baby got adopted... she has a dog and cat in her new home and the people who fell in love with her. Happy happy news!
Further update 7/10/99: I volunteered today and noticed this note on the board - "Just stopped by to tell you how much we love 'Baby' adopted 5/30/99. She's fit in great & doing well. Loves to sit in the windows & dresser drawers! Thanks." I also found where her people signed when they adopted her - "Phoebe, Lucy + Mickey welcome 'Baby' to the familiy."

2/3/99 Note: We still have Jadzia and are seriously considering adopting her. We didn't bring any new fosters in for a while after the group with distemper. We wanted to thoroughly clean that room and also wait a while to be safer before bringing in new animals.
Also the shelter decided to temporarily stop fostering out kittens because last year there was such a high rate of death among the kittens especially. Hopefully they will allow it again soon. We hate to think of babies spending their first eight weeks in a cage at the shelter.
