July through December 2000 - foster animals

Count: 117 foster cats/kittens as of December 31, 2000. (18 on this page of 2000)

December 19, 2000 - January 5, 2001

#28961 Dewey (aka Sylvester) - orange tabby, 3 mos old, M, shorthair

Dewey got his name because he looks just like the young character Dewey on the TV show Malcolm In The Middle. It is really eerie.
Dewey is very skinny little guy and very vocal. He was out for adoption with another kitten and after the other kitten was adopted he got sick and vocal. He has at least a URI, but he needs some general TLC. He is a sickly looking little guy and probably would have been put down, but one of the workers at the shelter grew attached to him. I can see why, he is adorable and loves attention.

#28735 Palmer - brown tabby, 4 yrs old, M, surrender, longhair (declawed)

Palmer is very depressed acting. He stopped eating at the shelter, at least partly due to a URI. He seems like a sweet cat, but he doesn't appreciate us pilling and force feeding him. He likes to hang out in his carrier right now.
Palmer started eating pretty quickly. He is much friendlier and happier when he isn't sick.
Update: I asked to have Palmer moved to Mounds, but he wasn't there long. He moved in the weekend of Christmas and was adopted only 5 days later, December 27th. He has a new cat friend in his new home and two older children too.

November 27, 2000
Dovey, our long term mama foster (once feral) is finally going down to Mounds in Fitchburg tonight. She is unrecognizable from when we got her back in April. She rarely even gets startled and she never bites anymore. She loves to greet us, especially in the bathroom. (Adopted 12-3-00 - ONLY 8 days!)

November 18, 2000 - December 2, 2000

#28742 Cheezy Poof - orange w/white, kitten (~6 wks), F, stray, shorthair
#? Cracker Jack - brown tabby w/white, kitten (~8 wks), M, stray?, shorthair
#? Slim Jim - brown tabby w/white, kitten (~8 wks), M, stray?, shorthair

I haven't fostered babies for a while I guess! These guys have energy to spare, even when they are sick. They are adorable and very vocal, especially Cheezy. They all have mild URIs.

October 17, 2000 - November 18, 2000

#27757 Bear - white persian, adult 1.5 yrs, M, surrender, longhair

Bear was very stuffed and wouldn't eat at the shelter. We were very happy when he started eating on his own the second day we had him. Bear is a friendly guy who loves people. He has a lot of problems with his fur, from the face goop that he wipes onto his forearms when he cleans his face (and is hard to remove), to the many mats full of disgusting flea dirt on his stomach, arms and behind.
Bear has cleaned up nicely. It took a lot of grooming but he is looking very pretty now. He is waiting to be neutered, poor guy was intact, but he is so sweet that we don't mind keeping him longer.
Update: Bear is down at mounds Fitchburg. I found out that he was surrendered because his owner died. He was adopted on 12/5/00.

October 5, 2000 - October 17, 2000

#27706 Robert - black and white, kitten born 6-7-00, M, foster, shorthair
#27707 Julia - muted calico, kitten born 6-7-00, F, foster, shorthair

Julia and Robert have lingering URI symptoms. They had been fostered since their birth, but their foster mom is moving to California so she had to bring them back in. Now we are keeping them till they get a little better.
These two are sweet and friendly. Julia is just gorgeous (I love her colors) and they are both very soft and cuddly. It's a little disconcerting to have them right up in your face and then sneeze enormously, but they mean well! Their first foster mom did a great job socializing them.

September 18, 2000 - October 5, 2000

#27407 Alan Shepard - orange tabby (slightly lighter), kitten ~ 6 wks old, M, surrender, shorthair
#27408 John Glenn - orange tabby, kitten ~ 6 wks old, M, surrender, shorthair
#27409 Neil Armstrong - orange tabby with white socks + bib, kitten ~ 6 wks old, M, surrender, shorthair
#27410 Christy McAuliffe - brown tabby, kitten ~ 6 wks old, F, surrender, shorthair
#27411 Buzz Aldrin - Brown tabby, kitten ~ 6 wks old, M, surrender, shorthair

This is a cute and friendly group of tabby kittens. Since most of the kittens I've met this summer have been shy or terrified of people this group was a fun change. They were pretty healthy (though I've heard a plenty of sneezes), but they did have fleas. I was having a hard time naming them, but the thought of astronaut names came to mind and it fit perfectly. Like astronauts, these guys are all the quickest vertical climbers I've seen. They can scale up my jeans while I'm standing and make it to my shoulders in no time. They'll even climb my legs as I'm walking
around!

August 2, 2000 - September 9, 2000

#26066 Moopy - white and black, adult, M, surrender, shorthair

Moopy has a mild URI, and he also seems to be missing his litter box at times. He is a real lover. He stays very active during greeting, rolling all over in your lap, climbing up and rolling onto the floor. He uses his tail and paws to hold onto us and pulls our hands to pet his head. Moopy is a cute little guy. We found that Moopy had coccidia so we kept him long enough to treat for that.
Unfortunately as much as he loves people Moopy has a real problem with other cats. He is the first foster that I've had that will repeatedly and very excitedly chase and attack all other cats he meets. He gets very agitated if he even sees another cat. The surprising thing is that he actually lived with several other cats. According to the form that his previous owners filled out, he got along fine with them!
Update: 10-30-00 Moopy has been adopted and will get plenty of attention with his new owners, an older gentleman and his daughter. He'll have someone home all the time and no other cats to bother him. They are thrilled with him (of course).

July 7, 2000 - August 2, 2000

#25741 Adrienne - black, mom 11 months old, F, surrender, shorthair
#25742 Audrey - black ~ 5 wks old, F, surrender, shorthair
? Hadji - orange/white ~ 7 wks old, M, stray?, medium hair
? Hana - black ~ 7 wks old, M, stray?, medium hair

We mixed two groups here rather than let little Audrey be lonely. Unfortunately mom did not like any kittens but her own little darling. She got upset when the fluffy ones played or moved or did much of anything and began beating on them with her paws. It wasn't hard enough to hurt them but she wasn't just playing. Luckily a few days after we kept them mostly separate mom Adrienne had a change of heart. She started nursing and grooming them and never swats them anymore. Otherwise mom Adrienne is a very sweet loving cat. She adores her kitten and loves attention from people. She is gorgeous with a shiny silky black velvet coat. She does not like other adult cats though. She is hyper to jump out and when she does get out she alternately greets and chases our cats.
Hadji is cute but clumsy. He seems to have some genetic problem. He is bowlegged and unable to judge distances real well. Hadji had us real scared when he suddenly stopped eating and got real sick (he had camphlobacteriosis). Luckily he got better almost right away. His sister Hana is shy (and the beatings by Adrienne weren't helping). She is so skinny under her fluff.
